Creating a Rock Cycle Diagram

Overview:
Students will create a Rock Cycle Diagram using Microsoft PowerPoint.

Intended Audience:
5th Grade, Science

Allotted time:
2 -3 class periods

Objective(s):
  • Describe the processes responsible for the formation of rocks to include igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.
  • Construct a simple diagram using the computer to organize and examine information on the rock cycle.

TEKS:
Science TEKS
5.12B, 5.11A, 5.2E

TA TEKS:
1B, 2D, 2E, 3B, 7A, 7B, 9B, 10C, 12B

Procedure:

Classroom (Day One):

Materials:

  1. Explain that the students will be creating a chart to show a rocks life cycle. Ask students if they have ever seen a diagram that details a cycle? Show an example of a cycle.
  2. Review the different kinds of rocks (igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary)
  3. Draw a large circle on the board. Write the words igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary evenly spaced about 1/3 of the way around the circle.
  4. Ask students to generate a list of ways rocks can change from igneous to metamorphic and to sedimentary. Write the list on the board. Guide students so their list includes: cooling, melting, heat and pressure, weathering and erosion. (Fig. 1 and 2)
  5. Ask students to help you take the items they created from the list and connect the three types of rocks listed. Add magma to the rock cycle. Add arrows and explain why you need them on your diagram.
  6. Pass out printed copies of the Rock Cycle Storyboard.
  7. Have students create a rock cycle on the first square of their storyboard.

Computer Lab (Day Two) Research:

Materials:

  • Internet Jump Page (one copy in each of your students network folder or one in a central folder all students can access)
  • Rock Cycle Storyboards from last class meeting.

  1. Have students research of each of three types of rocks using the Rock Cycle Internet Jump page as starting point.
  2. Students should write their definition on each square of the storyboard corresponding to the rock type.
  3. Students should also give examples of each type on the corresponding slide.
  4. List resources used to complete the project on the bibliography page of their storyboard.

Computer Lab (Day Three) Create Presentation:

Materials:

  1. Have students open Rock Cycle Template.
  2. Show how to save file and remind students to save frequently.
  3. Show students how to add their names to their presentation.
  4. Pass out Rock Cycle "How To" cards. Demonstrate how to do the following: Drag objects onto the slide, rotate arrows, nudge pieces, shrink/grow arrows, flip arrow in a different direction, move to other slides to add information, add pictures to slides, spell check, and save document.
  5. Have students type information from their storyboard onto their slides.
